The Promise Concept

The biggest fear parents of children with special needs has is ‘What will happen to my child when I am no longer able to care for him/her?’ For 126 young adults and their families, Promise is a dream come true. Now that construction of our affordable housing community has been completed, we are working hard to ensure that the lives of our residents are filled with endless opportunities, fun and friendships and a sense of self-sufficiency that will propel them into the future.

A dream 13 years in the making, Promise in Brevard is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was established in 2009 to provide a safe, affordable housing opportunity for young adults with special needs, allowing them to live independently while simultaneously working and thriving in their community. Promise’s Affordable Housing Community is enhanced by Promise’s Life Enrichment Program, which incorporates a variety of programs and services that seek to provide permanent, long-term solutions beyond housing for adults with special needs. Our Life Enrichment Program includes: vocational training and employment opportunities, transportation services, independent living courses (which include banking, budgeting and financial planning), health and fitness programs, and more. Promise’s Life Enrichment Program offers over 50 activities and classes per week for Promise residents. Currently, Promise is the first of its kind in the state of Florida to combine all of these elements and amenities. We believe it will serve as a model for communities across the country and even the world.

Promise in Brevard is located at 4105 Norfolk Parkway on 39 acres, adjacent to the Hammock Landing shopping plaza in West Melbourne, Florida. Promise is home to 126 young adults with special needs. The average age of our residents is 34. Rent at this affordable housing complex is calculated on a sliding scale based on income.

Dream Team

The Promise concept was developed with the help of a special group of young individuals, known as “The Dream Team.” From the amenities to the floor plans, this team of residents worked closely with our designers since day one, sharing their thoughts and visions about everything the Promise lifestyle should offer.

Amenities at Promise Include:

  • • 1, 2, 3 & 4-BR Apartments
  • • 150-Seat Dining Room
  • • Zero-Entry heated pool and therapeutic spa
  • • Summer Kitchen & Brick Pizza Oven
  • • Poolside Snack Bar
  • • Media Room
  • • Video Production Studio
  • • 9-Acre Condo Subdivision*

A *9-Acre Promise Condo Subdivision is a separate planned single-family townhome/condo subdivision on 9 acres of our 39-acre property. The subdivision will primarily serve parents and family members of Promise residents, staff, and more independent individuals or married couples with special needs that want a safe housing choice. This adjacent subdivision will provide a revenue source for Promise as well as the opportunity for family members to live close to and support their loved one living at Promise.

Business-Social Enterprises

The Promise concept also includes 10 planned business-social enterprises, which will generate income for the organization, and once established, will allow Promise to be self-sustaining. Our goal is for all 126 Promise residents (Promisers) to have a job, whether it is at one of our business-social enterprises or elsewhere in the community, providing them with a purpose and a paycheck that will allow them to pay for their own supportive living services and fully experience the freedom of independent living.

These business-social enterprises include:

  • 1. Promise Treasures Thrift Shoppe (established in October 2013)
  • 2. Promise Creative Arts Center (established in Summer 2018)
  • 3. Promise Culinary/Catering Program (established in Summer 2018)
  • 4. Promise Café & Bakery (Opening soon)
  • 5. Disability-Friendly Hair & Nail Salon (Opening soon)
  • 6. Promise Doggie Daycare & Dog Park (2019)
  • 7. Promise Hydroponic Garden (established in Spring 2018)
  • 8. Disability-Friendly Bed & Breakfast (TBD)
  • 9. Full-Sized Gym to host Special Olympics & Paralympics events (TBD)
